How to Clean and Care for Pizza Scissors So They Stay Sharp

A good pair of pizza scissors lasts for years if you treat it right. The good news: it takes less than two minutes after dinner.

Rinse right after use

Cheese and tomato sauce dry quickly. Ideally, rinse the scissors under warm water straight after cutting. Anything still soft comes off without effort.

Removing dried-on cheese

If the cheese has already hardened, soak the scissors for 5 minutes in warm water with a little dish soap. Then wipe them with the soft side of a sponge. Don't use steel wool or abrasive cleaners: they scratch the stainless steel and dull the edge.

Don't forget the pivot

Where the blades cross, dough and grease tend to collect. Open the scissors fully and clean this area with a small brush, such as an old toothbrush.

Hand wash or dishwasher?

Even if scissors are dishwasher-safe, hand washing is gentler on the edge. Harsh detergent tabs, high temperatures and knocking against other dishes will dull any blade faster over time. If you use the dishwasher, put the scissors in the cutlery basket, away from other metal items.

Dry them well

Stainless steel doesn't rust, but water spots and limescale don't look great. Dry the scissors with a cloth after washing, especially around the pivot.

Store them properly

Loose in a drawer, the blades knock against other utensils and go dull. Store the scissors closed, ideally in their own compartment or hanging up.
